Objective The aim of the NEXT STEP (briNe formation in a warming world: EXTending the STorfjordEn Polynya time series) series of cruises is to continue a unique time series documenting dense water formation by brine rejection in the Storfjorden. This French observational effort, initiated in 2011, is essential to document the impact of the large and fast warming currently underway in Arctic regions on dense water formation and the associated air-sea CO2 flux. It is complementary to ongoing observational work in the Barents Sea (Norwegian project "Nansen Legacy") and Nares Strait (Franco-Canadian project "Refuge Arctic"). We therefore wish to ensure the continuity of the time series monitoring the dense water formation in the Storfjorden over the next 5-10 years. NB: depending on the availability of research vessels, yearly cruises or cruises every other year can be envisaged.
