No scientific research results are expected from these campaigns. The goal is for students to obtain interesting findings that allow, each year:

• to locate the Ligurian current and the front it creates on its outer edge;
• to assess its particle load (richer near the coast than in the current, and much lower offshore);
• to highlight that the deep chlorophyll maximum is much more diffuse and less intense near the coast than offshore;
• to demonstrate that there is a strong gradient in the abundance, but especially in the composition, of mesozooplankton communities along the coastal-offshore transect.

And, in the case where the alternative plan is carried out:

• to detect the temperature and salinity signature of the plumes of the Var and other adjacent rivers;
• to test whether this signal is also present in the concentrations of chlorophyll, suspended matter, etc.;
• to highlight changes in the composition of mesozooplankton in plume waters vs. coastal waters.

Above all, students gain hands-on experience of working at sea. This allows them to better understand the capabilities and limitations of instruments, the logic behind station placement, the possibilities daily work time at sea, etc. The main objective (and thus the main outcome) is educational.
