Objective	The MOLIT buoy is one of the measurement systems of the National Observation Service COAST-HF (www.coast-hf.fr) labelled in 2018 and part of the LIttoral and Coastal Research Infrastructure (IR ILICO). Within the framework of different projects, new equipment are deployed to enable the development of innovative technologies and respond to identified scientific issues. The MOLIT buoy has been used as a test platform for the adaptation and development of a new continuous measurement profiler (WIREWALKER, Rockland Scientific®) as well as the automation of flow cytometry (CytoSense, cytobuoy®) for the determination and quantification of phytoplankton. In addition to providing high-frequency data, this measuring station is a decisive element in the knowledge of the water bodies of the Mor Braz. Indeed, the deployment site in the Baie de Vilaine was chosen for its specificities and particularly for the significant risks of hypoxia and even anoxia phenomena. This measuring and sampling station is also positioned near a Water Framework Directive control point.

Scientific context

The MOLIT station is part of the National Observing Service COAST-HF from the ILICO Research Infratructure. This station, consisting of an moored buoy, is designed to continuously observe hydrological, meteorological and biogeochemical parameters in coastal marine waters. Data acquired automatically by autonomous instrumented measurement stations are transmitted by digital GSM link to the Coriolis data center where they are validated, processed, archived and distributed to the users. The heart of the MAREL measurement concept on the buoy comprises a measuring cell receiving the various sensors, placed on the surface on a floating support. The water samples are pumped to known depths by tubes in a hose from the surface to the bottom. The entire hydraulic circuit is protected against marine fouling by injection of chlorine ions. The support is defined according to the location of observing stations (coastal buoy, light buoy, pontoons, structure on foreshore).

The MOLIT buoy is one of the proposed responses for continuous observation in exposed marine coastal areas.

In addition to the high-frequency data provider aspect, this measuring station is a key element in the knowledge of Mor Braz water masses. Indeed, the site of deployment in Bay of Vilaine was chosen for its specificities and especially for the important risks of occurrence of hypoxia or anoxia evnets. The detailed knowledge of the stratification of the water masses of this bay must allow the calibration of the numerical models, in particular MARS3D (http://wwz.ifremer.fr/mars3d/) and CROCO (http: //www.croco-ocean .org /) for the main physical and chemical parameters and in particular its distribution in dissolved oxygen. The MOLIT measuring station is located in the bay of Vilaine in a region of important phytoplankton proliferation (occurrence of frequent coloured waters, deoxygenation of the bottom waters). The MOLIT buoy allows for precise long-term monitoring of the development of phytoplankton biomass in the water column (fluorescence indicator) and to monitor the response of the environment in terms of deoxygenation of bottom waters. It allows to highlight the favorable conditions for the development of coloured waters and hypoxic crises.

Main results obtained in 2014
Observations from the MOLIT buoy were used in the shellfish risk assessment in Quiberon Bay (RISCO project - Risques Conchylicoles en Baie de Quiberon - Mazurie et al., 2014). The observations collected at MOLIT represent the only high-frequency validation point for the numerical models that were used in the model assessment. The study showed that the OsHV-1 virus, which causes the observed mortalities, is mainly endogenous to the bay. A very marked spatialization was also highlighted, with a zone in the west relatively spared and a zone in the centre and east of the domain very affected.

Main results obtained in 2013
The data from the MOLIT station made it possible to explore the links between the excess mortality of farmed clams in the traict of Le Croisic and the exceptional rainfall of winter 2013. Data from the MOLIT station were used to characterise the desalination events observed in the region (Mazurie, 2013).

Main results obtained in 2012 (with some illustrations)

Contribution to the Water Framework Directive (WFD) and the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD)

In the different regulatory directives (WFD and MSFD), the MOLIT station contributes to different elements of these directives. MOLIT has been used to assess the pressures and impacts related to the global impact of nutrient and organic matter inputs leading to eutrophication in some regions. In particular, oxygen measurements from the MOLIT buoy in Vilaine Bay have allowed the observation of hypoxia events in this region, which appears to be the only potentially oxygen-deficient sub-region of the Bay of Biscay (Baudrier et al., 2012).

Within the framework of the DCSMM, the MOLIT station was also used to determine the spatio-temporal distribution of oxygen in the Bay of Biscay marine sub-region (Sourisseau et al., 2012). The singular character of the oxygen dynamics in Vilaine Bay could be described from these observations.

In terms of scientific exploitation and contributions to operational oceanography

The MOLIT buoy has contributed to the monitoring of the waters of Vilaine Bay and to the validation of the operational models of the PREVIMER project. Different episodes could be analysed such as those illustrated for March 2012 (Figure 1) and summer 2012 (Figure 2).

Stratification episodes such as those observed at the end of March (13 to 14°C and 11°C at the bottom - Figure 1) in connection with the high solar radiation, combined with low mixing conditions (low wind, low swell, low tidal range - tidal coefficient 29 on 2 March, 32 on 31 March) could be highlighted. Surface desalination combined with an increase in salinity at the bottom (e.g. 4 and 19 March) also appeared in connection with atmospheric events that had led to the Vilaine plume over the area. In terms of oxygen, the dynamics measured showed a decrease in dissolved oxygen at the bottom, due to the mineralisation of detrital organic matter, linked to the decomposition of phytoplankton produced in the previous days. The increase in the following days was due to the spring tide on 23 March (tidal coefficient of 92), which allowed oxygen to be reinjected from the atmosphere into the bottom waters. On the following days, the oxygen supply from the surface weakened, as oxygen consumption at the bottom once again became the majority, leading to a drop in dissolved oxygen at the end of March, which reached 5 ml l-1.

A decrease in dissolved oxygen at the bottom, from 4-5 ml l^-1 to 2 ml l^-1 in mid-July (2.1 ml l^-1 on 14 July), late July (2 ml l^-1 on 29 July) and mid-August (2 ml l^-1 on 14 August) was observed. This is due to the respiration of the phytoplankton sedimented on the bottom, and its degradation; indeed, an increase in bottom fluorescence is noted over the same period. These three periods correspond to periods of still water: tidal coefficient of 37 on 13 July, 53 on 28 July and 31 on 12 August. The increase in dissolved oxygen at the bottom in the following days is probably due to the spring tides of 22 July (tidal coefficient of 88), 2 August (coefficient of 99) and 20 August (coefficient of 99), which allow oxygen to be reinjected from the atmosphere into the bottom waters. The first episode of hypoxia from 21 July to the end of July is to be correlated with the significant proliferation of micro-algae (dinoflagellate Lepidodinium chlorophorum) observed from 23 July 2012 in Vilaine Bay. The rare very low oxygen values (< 1 ml l-1) recorded on 15 August and 22 September are probably measurement errors.

Often in summer, as from 17 to 22 August, oscillations in surface oxygen are observed twice a day, at the rhythm of the tides, with supersaturations near high tide, which represent intense photosynthesis at the surface. These surface oscillations are the signature of the advection of the Vilaine plume, which is richer in phytoplankton than the surrounding marine waters.

In terms of technological development

The design of the MOLIT buoy aimed to provide the scientific community with a multi-instrument platform in an exposed coastal area with accessibility and ergonomics at sea, making it easier for the intervention personnel to work. The design also took into account the mobility aspects of the buoy in order to adapt it to the road gauge, to the possibility of towing at sea, to the simplified handling for wintering and careening work. The system for measuring the physico-chemical parameters of the sea water will also have to allow measurements to be taken in the water column.

Based on these specifications, a steel boiler construction with a one-piece sampling system with two sampling points (bottom and surface) was designed. The mooring line consists of an umbilical providing the mechanical link with the ballast and the chain. This umbilical has 4 sampling pipes, one of which is used to pump water from the bottom to the surface where the measurements of the parameters of interest will be made. The two-stage pumping circuit is protected from biofouling by electrochlorination. The measuring system is compatible with a number of multi-parameter measuring probes (NKE, YSI, OTT). The measured data is transmitted once a day to the CORIOLIS data centre.

In conclusion, the float has good stability and its ergonomics are affectively improved compared to conventional cylindrical buoys moored at one or more points. Its structural robustness has been demonstrated by the absence of damage to its hull. The umbilical-buoy interface has been reinforced. The presence of a roof offers good protection to equipment and instruments. The berthing of the buoy by a light boat in heavy seas remains to be improved. The measurement system allows measurements to be taken during a 2.5 month measurement campaign before the sensors of the measurement probe are recalibrated.

A patent "SYSTEM FOR MEASURING OR MONITORING THE QUALITY OF A LIQUID MEDIA WITH LOW ENERGY CONSUMPTION" has been filed.

Data acquired and analyses carried out at sea and on shore

The MOLIT measuring station located in the bay of Vilaine (47 ° 27.6000W and 02 ° 39.4000 W, WGS84) performs a measurement alternately at the bottom and at the surface every hour.

The measured data are temperature, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, fluorescence.

The raw measurements recorded during the campaigns from 2012 to 2019 are represented in the graphs below as an example.

The data is subject to quality control and validation and are published with a DOI: https://doi.org/10.17882/46529. They are saved in the Coriolis data center. Data are is available on the web portal https://data.coriolis-cotier.org/.

To perform these measurements a multiparameter probe (NKE MP6) is installed in the measurement circuit. This probe is metrologically adjusted before the start of its campaign and is calibrated at the end of its measurement campaign. Depending on the time of year, the probe takes its measurements for 2 to 3 months. At the end of each period of 2-3 months, the probe in place is replaced by a new probe itself adjusted metrologically. Each metrological step (adjustment, calibration) is the subject of a service report which will allow the data to be qualified while respecting the maximum tolerable deviations set by the scientist in charge of this qualification.

In parallel with these measurement campaigns, occasional in situ checks (weekly to bi-weekly) are carried out by the LER / MPL laboratory using a probe with the same characteristics as that installed on the Molit buoy. These checks cannot be qualified as metrological operations strictly speaking because they are not carried out under controlled conditions (homogeneity of the comparison medium, synchronization of measurements, etc.). They can nevertheless be used to detect possible sensor drifts and provide additional elements for data qualification.

For each year of measurements, a scientific qualification report of the data acquired by the MOLIT measurement station in the bay of Vilaine is drawn up and is made available for free access on the Archimer portal of Ifremer.

These reports present in particular tables of daily Quality validation (Good, Doubtful, False) data.
