Objective

Since 2013 for mesozooplankton and 2017 for macrozooplankton and fish, we have conducted yearly surveys in January-February aboard the R/V "Marion Dufresne". These surveys were held in conjunction with the observation program "South Indian Ocean Observation" (OISO PI: Claire Lo Monaco) (https://caraus.ipsl.jussieu.fr/oiso-accueil.html ) and THEMISTO (PI: Cédric Cotté) on using acoustics to determine abundances of fish and plankton.

The REPCCOAI surveys took place in January and February 2017 to 2019. The MDCPR surveys were held from 2013 to 2016.

The study area is located in the subtropical Indian Ocean and the Southern Ocean. The sampling network passes through the Crozet and Kerguelen archipelagos in the Southern Ocean and ends nearby the islands of Saint-Paul and New Amsterdam in the Southern part of Indian Ocean. These cruises cross several oceanographic and biogeochemical provinces ranging from the tropical waters of the Indian Ocean to the cold waters of the Southern Ocean knowing that the study area is separated by different hydrological fronts identifiable by their physical and chemical characteristics.

The mesozooplankton was collected (1) at subsurface continuously between OISO stations by the mean of a Continuous Plankton Recorder and (2) at each stations by the mean of a WP2 (200 µm) with a vertical tow (in 2018 and 2019). The macrozooplankton such as euphausiids and the mesopelagic fish were sampled at each station with an Isaacs-Kidd Midwater Trawl net (IKMT). The IKMT net has a metal wing at the bottom of the opening to keep the net open. The net has a total length of 17 m with a decreasing mesh size ranging from 4 cm at the entrance to 0.5 cm at the cod end. The IKMT has been deployed from the surface to different water depths mainly 200 m, 600 m or 1000-1200 m. The net is towed with a speed of the ship between two and three knots.

Fish and plankton are processed in the laboratory to study their distribution and to map diversity patterns.

In addition to the samples taken as part of the study of krill diversity (sampling for transcriptome sequencing), the euphausiids species caught with IKMT net in sufficient quantity (E. vallentini and E. triacantha) and in a state compatible with in vivo experimentation were kept in stabulation in a cold room for approximately 24 hours before the implementation of a heat shock in an aquarium (CT50) according to the formalised protocol (see Cascella et al., 2015) on the other species that have already been tested.
