Objective	Our project focuses on the study of intermediate trophic levels of the pelagic ecosystem: zooplankton and micronekton. Using a combination of observations, instrumentation and modeling, our project focuses on the response of living organisms to physical and chemical environmental forcings. We seek to better understand the mechanisms structuring the pelagic ecosystem that supports tuna fisheries in the Caledonian Economic Zone (EEZ) and, more generally, in the South Pacific. The project combines the skills of statisticians, acousticians, biogeochemists, oceanographers, biologists and fishery scientists from several research organisations to model and analyse observations on intermediate trophic levels. One of the objectives of our study is to explore the ability of ADCPs to provide information on zooplankton/micronekton distribution and abundance in the Caledonian EEZ. In addition to direct understanding from new observations, we seek to improve our understanding of the distribution and behaviour of tuna prey by parameterizing/validating our prey model through at-sea campaigns. The longer term goal is to improve our understanding of the distribution and behaviour of tuna prey in order to better understand the tuna - environment relationships in the Caledonian EEZ.

Scientific context

The tuna resource is essential for most of the small Pacific developing countries and represents an important part of the local economy in the French territories: New Caledonia and French Polynesia. Evaluating the size of the stocks, their distribution and understanding the resulting catch distribution is an important issue as it involves considerable economic and social stakes. The impact of the environment on tuna resources and fisheries is a widely studied phenomenon but the processes by which it acts are complex and still poorly understood.

In New Caledonia the total catch in 2008 was 2384 tonnes of tuna, mainly composed of 62% albacore and 18% yellowfin tuna. There is a marked bimodal seasonality of albacore tuna catches with peaks in August and December and catches are located rather in the western, north-western quadrant of the area, but it is not yet known what factors constrain this seasonal behaviour, not to mention its variability linked to the El Niño/La Niña (ENSO) phenomenon.

Among the environmental variables of the area, the hydrodynamics, nutrients and phytoplankton of the region are the best known and simulated. However, the lack of knowledge about the distribution of zooplankton, the distribution of tuna prey and the migratory status of tuna is probably the major obstacle to understanding the observed distribution.

Our project focuses on the study of intermediate trophic levels of the New Caledonian pelagic ecosystem: zooplankton and micronekton. These components are located at the interface between physico-chemical forcings, which largely determine their distribution and abundance, and the exploited fishery resources, tuna in particular, for which they constitute the main food.

We carried out a series of five multidisciplinary campaigns of 14 to 20 days during the two peak fishing seasons (August and December) between 2011 and 2016 when the physico-chemical conditions are very different, as are the estimates of the primary production and prey models of tuna. The physico-chemical and primary production parameters measured are: temperature, salinity, fluorimetry, turbidity, light, currents, nutrient salts, photosynthetic pigments, phytoplankton abundance, carbon assimilation (primary production). Secondary production (zooplankton, micronecton) was characterized by acoustics (TAPS acoustic profiler, S-ADCP and L-ADCP current meters, SIMRAD EK60 multi-frequency sounder), zooplankton and micronekton net sampling. In addition, these campaigns are supplemented by modelling integrating all the measured parameters.
