Objectif

OHA-SIS-BIO - Observatoire HydroAcoustique de la SISmicité et de la BIOdiversité de l'océan Indien - est un programme hydroacoustique à long terme pour surveiller l'activité sismique des dorsales et l'activité vocale des grands mammifères marins dans l'océan Indien austral. Un réseau d'hydrophones autonomes immergés dans l'axe du canal SOFAR (9 mouillages) a éré déployé et entretenu annuellement de 2010 à debut 2023, entre La Réunion, Crozet, Kerguelen et Amsterdam, profitant des voyages annuels du N.O. Marion Dufresne vers ces îles australes.

Le réseau d'hydrophones était conçu pour surveiller en continu l'activité sismique associée à trois dorsales océaniques à taux d'expansion contrastés (16 à 70 mm/an) et à la déformation intraplaque dans le sud du bassin central indien. Cette approche s'avère très efficace pour détecter et localiser les séismes de faible magnitude (>3), qui échappent aux réseaux sismologiques terrestres, et pour distinguer les événements tectoniques et magmatiques. Les objectifs étaient de caractériser l'activité sismique de dorsales médio-océaniques à taux d'ouverture ultra-lent, lent et intermédiaire, ainsi que la distribution temporelle et spatiale de la déformation intraplaque.

Cet observatoire était également conçu pour surveiller l'activité vocale des grands rorquals à fanons. L'acoustique passive s'avère en effet un outil très efficace pour surveiller la présence de ces mammifères marins acoustiquement très actifs. Au moins 5 populations de rorquals bleus ont été détectées par notre réseau. L'objectif était d'améliorer les connaissances sur la présence, l'abondance et les migrations saisonnières de ces grands mammifères marins, classés en danger, sur plusieurs cycles annuels dans l'océan Indien austral.

Ces données ont aussi apporté des informations inattendues sur l'état de mer et les icebergs (vêlage, collision, dislocation). Ces deux applications nécessitent également de longues séries temporelles pour valider les modèles de prévision de l'état de mer ou pour suivre l'évolution du bruit ambiant océanique (naturel ou artificiel).

Tous ces objectifs ont en commun de nécessiter des enregistrements hydroacoustiques basse fréquence (< 120 Hz) et des séries temporelles continues aussi longues que possible pour être représentatives du régime sismique des dorsales, de l'activité des baleines ou des variations du bruit ambiant, dans ces régions éloignées et peu accessibles de l'océan.

Ce programme a été soutenu par la Flotte Océanographique Française, le CNRS (INSU), l'Université de Brest et le Conseil Régional de Bretagne.
