Objective |
Since 2004 the annual collaboration between ICOTA and the Belgian PELAGANT programme aims to contribute and understand how: 1) environmental factors(physical, chemical and biological structure of the water column, ice covering, bathymetry, weather conditions) influence pelagic diversity and the distribution of key species and 2)the production time series and spatial dynamics of plankton affect distribution patterns of ichthyological species and Euphausiids and their recruitment (CNRS Antarctic work zone). In the context of climate change, special attention is given to the inter-annual variability in the way the pelagic ecosystem functions, in a region where the processes controlling its development are not well known. |
