Objective | Following on from the IMAGES V cruise legs 1-4, leg 5 was scheduled to take cores of sediment at several sites of the Portuguese Margin, the Gulf of Cadiz, the Alboran Sea and the Gulf of Lion, using the IFRTP (CALYPSO) giant corer, deployed aboard RV Marion Dufresne. These sedimentary cores came from areas with a high rate of sedimentation which can supply very high resolution recordings of climate and environmental variations during the past 100 to 200 millennia. Some sites (Gulf of Lion) were also chosen to supply a lithostratigraphic reconstitution which could be compared or even be used for calibration with seismic profiles acquired on IFREMER cruises. Water temperature and salinity measurements were performed on the Atlantic seafront using CTD casts to supply calibration elements for the method using alkenones to determine paleo- temperatures and paleo-salinities. This falls under the IMAGES programme. The cruise's trajectory was: Bay of Biscay, Portuguese Margin, Gulf of Cadiz, Gibraltar, Alboran Sea, Balearic islands, Gulf of Lion. |
