Objective | This mainly involved mooring two Atlas buoys for the PIRATA programme. The Valse buoy was moored at 10 deg W/5 deg S and the other at 10 deg W/0 deg N. While the vessel was on its way, twice-daily radio soundings were performed at the moment a NOAA/ATOVS satellite passed, to estimate the vertical profile of water vapour. In addition, in response to a request by a TV crew from the FR3 station, a video documentary was filmed for the regular "Thalassa" show. The related programmes are ANTARES and SINPAS. The cruise took place with a delay of about ten days, due to the late arrival of the container holding the Atlas equipment that was shipped from Seattle. Initially, it was planned to moor the Valse buoy at 6 deg S/10 deg W. Because of numerous long-liners arriving in the area, we decided to moor it slightly further north (at 5 deg S/10 deg N). |
