Objective	Building up time series of abundance indices for the main demersal and benthic species in the Celtic Sea and the Bay of Biscay. Measuring inter-annual changes in their recruitment. Mapping the spatial distribution of species and their inter-annual variations, as well as the source of this variability. (biotic and/or abiotic parameters, impact of fisheries). Studying the benthos and the predation it is subject to. Looking for processes to process and conserve horse mackerel pulp. The related programmes are: Assessment of EC-managed fisheries and non-EC fisheries, Fishery ecosystems and the Fishery information system. The cruise had 2 legs: On the first leg, the head scientist was Jean-Claude MAHE and on the second, Robert BELLAIL.

Summary of measurements

-129 standardized 30 min day-time bottom trawl hauls with the GOV 36/47 high
opening trawl, in 22 geographic-bathymetric strata on sea beds 15 to 600m deep.
-With each trawl haul, the determination, weighing and measurement of each
species caught was performed, sex determination for the main commercial species
and hard tissue samples taken (otoliths and illicia).
-With each trawl haul, acquisition of biological parameters for species under EU
management: hake, whiting, cod, angler, megrim and sole (RH/Lorient, L'houmeau,
Nantes).
-2 deep water night-time trawl hauls (700 and 800 m) to collect and photograph
specimens (RH/L'Houmeau and Nantes).
-108 vertical temperature and salinity profiles taken using the Seabird 19 CTD
(RH/Lorient and ECOHAL/Nantes).
-6 benthos stations taken using a Smith grab for study on shore (IUEM/Brest).

-25 controlled production trials for horse mackerel pulp (VP/GA/Nantes).
-2500 stomach contents to be studied on shore(IUEM/Brest).
-2 mackerel blood samples (UMR biometrics and evolutionary biology joint
research unit, Universitu Claude Bernard, Lyon).
-2 samples of anglerfish flesh for genetic analysis (Collège de France
Concarneau).
