Objectif La campagne ZONECO 5 est la dernière campagne de reconnaissance bathymétrique de la zone économique de La Nouvelle Calédonie. Elle intéresse la partie occidentale de cette dernière et en particulier la ride de Lord Howe située à l'Ouest de l'île de Nouvelle-Calédonie. Elle a pour objectif de préciser la morpho structure et la nature (continentale amincie ?) de la ride, à l'aide d'une reconnaissance bathymétrique multifaisceaux et géophysique détaillée, et de confirmer, par sismique et à partir de prélèvements in-situ, l'existence du gisement potentiel d'hydrates de gaz mis en évidence sur la bordure orientale de la ride de Lord Howe. Ce dernier, vaste d'environ 25000 km2, concernant les eaux à la fois Françaises/Néo-Calédoniennes et Australiennes, a été identifié lors de la campagne du Rig-Seismic (21 avril au 24 mai 1998), première phase du programme Franco-Australien FAUST (French Australian Seismic Transect) menée en étroite conjonction avec le programme ZONECO.
