Objective | ZONECO 5 was the last cruise for the bathymetric surveying of the New Caledonian economic zone. It concerned the western part of this zone and particularly Lord Howe Ridge, located to the west of the island of New Caledonia. Its aim was to specify the morphological structure and type (thin continental?) of the ridge, using multibeam bathymetric surveys and detailed geophysics. It also sought to confirm, using seismics and in situ sampling, the existence of potential gas hydrate deposits shown on the eastern edge of Lord Howe ridge. This vast area, covering about 25,000 km2, involves French/New Caledonian and Australian waters. It was identified during the Rig-Seismic cruise (21 April to 24 May 1998), which was the first phase of the Franco-Australian FAUST (French Australian Seismic Transect) programme conducted in close conjunction with ZONECO. |
