Objective

The Zeployf2 was the second cruise carried out in the framework of systematically exploring the Exclusive Economic Zone of French Polynesia. It carried on from the Zepolyf1 cruise performed in late 1996. It was conducted in partnership with the French State, the Territory, Ifremer, the University of French Polynesia (UPF), IRD, CEA, and some territorial services, providing a detailed survey of all the shoals and surroundings of islands in the Austral archipelago. The strategy implemented was based on EM12 surveying (bathymetry and acoustic image acquisition) amongst other things. It enabled 26 dredge hauls to be performed, whose results will provide a potential inventory of mineral resources like polymetalic crusts, as well as better understanding of the context of how seamounts came into being, through basalt geochemistry amongst other things.
