Objective

Microbiological study at hydrothermal sites on the Eastern Pacific ridge: Phylogenic diversity of thermophilic and hyperthermophilic prokaryotes. Interactions with the physical-chemical environment. Distribution, location and abundance of thermophiles in the hydrothermal environment and particularly its mineral structures. Seeking and characterizing hyperthermophilic barophilic micro-organisms. Adaptation to ionizing radiations and resistance to heavy metals. Mesuring metabolic activities in situ. Looking for genetic transfers in the hydrothermal environment and the genetic elements (plasmids and viruses) involved. Research turned towards the metabolic types which could have biotechnological applications.
