Objective The general objective was to study the ocean's responses to changes in the environment induced by human activity. This mainly involves observing and predicting changes in a biogeochemical cycle of carbon and its associated elements in order to determine the ocean's response to the increase in carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations in the atmosphere and to other sensitive elements like some trace metals. This falls under the INSU's DYFAMED observation service project, with J.C. Marty as scientific director. The monthly missions began in 1991 and the observation service was created by INSU in 1995. Missions were to take place aboard RV Georges Petit. The site is located in the central part of the Ligurian Sea. The reference point is located at 123 of Cap Ferrat, 28 nautical miles away from this headland (i.e., precisely at 43°25,400'N and 07°51,800' E). The PAPADOC mission dates were: 25/04/98, 05/05 to 08/05/98, 16/06/98, 20 to 22/07/98, 1 - 2 and 4/09/98, 9 and 10/10/98, 14/11/98, 7 to 9/12/98.
