Objective The biomarker concept is the tool used to detect the effects of exposure to pollutants. The programme aimed to assess the state of the marine ecosystem's health and predict the long-term effects of pollutants. In the first years, pre-routine monitoring was set up on the Bay of Seine based on the first of the biological markers, the detoxifying enzyme called EROD (ethoxyresorufine-O-deethylase) specific to HAPs and PCBs. Concurrently, studies were continued on AChe (Acetylcholinesterase) specific to pesticides (organophosphorus and carbamates) and on altered DNA. These complementary tests can improve the diagnosis of biological effects. In 1998 a pilot study on EROD was pursued in the Bay of Seine which was selected by ICES as a French coast reference. The study falls under the National observation network (RNO).
