Objective | In keeping with the priorities set out in the Common Fisheries Policy, the cruise objectives were to collect basic data to estimate the status of resources by directly assessing stock abundance and distribution along with biological sampling of commercial catches, i.e.: apparent fisheries distribution and abundance, abundance indicators by age group of the main commercial species, direct estimation of recruitment and its variations, knowledge about fish populations, growth parameters, hydrological data(surface and bottom), abundance indexes for ICES, locating and estimating the size of nurseries, data for the European "Nursery Grounds in the Coastal Zone of the English Channel" programme, data for the programme to identify and assess Sensitive ecosystems of interest for fisheries (ESIH), data to draw up recommendations for management, advice and expert assessments for local, national and EU decision-makers, principally in the frame of managing fished resources and planning for uses in coastal areas. The cruise is linked to the EU Bioeco contract number 96/040, Experimental trawling cruises in the North Sea and the Eastern English Channel (Coordinator and project leader: A. Carpentier, e-mail: andre.carpentier@ifremer.fr). The OSACA software program for data input developed by the IFREMER laboratory in Boulogne sur Mer in collaboration with the IT department of the Université du Littoral de Calais was used for the first time on this cruise. |
