Objective | The PEGASE98 was second in a series of three cruises, in the frame of the "ecology of small pelagics in the Bay of Biscay" programme, and took place aboard RV Thalassa from 20/5 to 21/6/1998. The programme aims to supplement knowledge about inter-annual variations in anchovy abundance and distribution, taking account of bio-ecological aspects affecting them. To that end, the conditions of primary and secondary production, the hydrological situation and the distribution and abundance of anchovy larvae and adults as well as other pelagic species sharing the same space at this time of year were studied. The cruise also combined systematic acoustic prospecting of the zone where anchovies were potentially present, pelagic trawl hauls, plankton catches and hydrological observations. The cruise had two phases: (1) initial acoustic prospecting in the southern Bay of Biscay in order to determine the distribution and abundance of anchovies in this sector at this time of year, along with observations of the hydrology, climate and plankton (2) observing, on a finer scale, the concentrations seen in the first exploration, on three study site zones, the first facing the Gironde River, the second offshore from the "Horseshoe" shelf break and the third midway between them.
