Objective	Studying the fate of artificial radionuclides in the zone where Rhone waters mix with coastal marine waters and in sedimentary altimetrics. Distribution between particulate, colloidal and dissolved phases in the water column and in recent sediments. Inter-comparison of sampling and sample processing methods between IPSN and ENEA teams. Tests to qualify the situ PERFILS pump developed by Technicap. This falls under the European ARMARA contract.

Summary of measurements

-Vertical T/S profiles by CTD casts in the mouth of the Rhone to locate discontinuity in density.
-Sampling large volumes (250 to 1,000 litres) of water at fixed stations (Roustan buoy and Petit Rhône) using shipboard pump (surface) and rosette (bottom).
-Filtration on 0.45 microns to obtain raw and filtered samples, precipitation of radionuclides present using two methods: copper ferrocyanide to analyze gamma emitters and iron hydroxides to measure plutonium isotopes.
-Tangential flow ultrafiltration to characterize organic and inorganic colloids (done onshore during cruise).
-In situ pumping of large volumes (500 to 1,000 l) of bottom water using PERFILS pump with binding of radionuclides on copper ferrocyanide (CuFeCN) impregnated cartridge filters.
-In situ pumping of large volumes (500 to 1,000 l) of surface water using shipboard pump with binding of radionuclides on copper ferrocyanide (CuFeCN) impregnated cartridge filters.
-Sediment samples were taken with a sleeved Flucha grab (500 cm2 section) which provided cores 30 to 40 cm high. Cores obtained were cut into centimetres.
