Objective | Studying benthic biological activity along an inshore-offshore gradient cutting across the major sedimentary features of the shelf and margin in the Gulf of Lion. The operations take place on four typical study sites: Coastal terrigenous muds, offshore muds, fine interfluve sediments (INT1 and INT2) and Canyon axis (AXE), and in a seasonal approach BBLL2 characterizing a winter situation. The operations performed may also be used to situate the HFF missions in a yearly cycle and add a geographic dimension to studies carried out on the coast in the framework of the PNOC programme. Studies conducted for each discipline included: biogeochemistry of supernatant water over sediment and of the sediment, bacteriology (microflora and biomass), benthic foraminifera, meiofauna and macrofauna, O2 and CO2 fluxes at the interface. This cruise combines 4 cruises which took place in winter 1997, summer 1997, spring 1998 and autumn 1998 aboard RVs EUROPE, TETHYS II and NEREIS. |
