Objective The PICOLO P2 aboard the oceanographic vessel ANTEA took place from 13 June to 10 July 1997, embarking and disembarking in the port of Abidjan. The geographical area studied extends from 10a 20°W between the Equator and 5°N. The objective was to describe the horizontal and vertical structure of an instability eddy typical of the zone called "PICOLO" as well as possible. This description concerns the physical environment and the first levels of the biological environment. It should be used for benchmarking and checking the ability of a general circulation model to represent the ocean on a medium scale and should also provide a reference for implementing a model combining the physical environment and the biological environment.
