Objective	Studying benthic biological activity in particulate fluxes and their short-term dynamics. 5 repetitive missions in March-April-May 1997(aboard research vessels L'Europe, Aegaeo, Tethys II and George Petit), as part of an HFF multidisciplinary approach (traps, pelagos and tracers), in the dual framework of PNOC and MTP II-MATER. Objectives were defined for each discipline, i.e. geochemistry, biochemistry, bacteriology, foraminifera, meiofauna and the lander. Biogeochemistry: studying the transformations of glutamic and benzoic acids, oxygen flux, CO2 at the water-sediment interface; studying carbohydrate, protein and lipid counts and amino acids to depths of 10 cm. Bacteriology: microflora, bacterial biomass, respiration rate of 14C glutamate and MCA-Leucine protein hydrolysis. Benthic foraminifera. Main zoological groups of the benthic meiofauna and macrofauna.

Summary of measurements

-Geochemistry: Studying biogeochemical transformations of glutamic and benzoic acid at the water-sediment interface
a)measuring the mineralization and bacterial incorporation of substrates injected into the supernatant water;
-b)Measuring the redox potential and the sediment porosity; organic carbon measurement; sampling the fluid mud surface of cores for lipid analysis; hydrolyzable C, carbonates, total nitrogen, total A.A. and total sugars.
-Biochemistry: counts of carbohydrates, proteins, lipids and amino acids every 2 cm of core down to 10 cm depth.
-Bacteriology: total microflora count, estimation of bacterial biomass, respiration rate of 14C glutamate, hydrolysis rate of proteins in supernatant water + 3 levels of sediments.
-Foraminifera: ecology and micro-distribution of benthic foraminifera by layers of 2 cm down to -10 cm. Fixing with ethanol and rose bengal of Holocene fauna > -10cm;
-Meiofauna: quantitative study of the main zoological groups every 2cm after sub-sampling of cores by 3cm diameter tubes, fixing in formaldehyde.
-Lander: a) measurement of O2 flux at the water-sediment interface in 2 benthic chambers; b) samples taken sequentially for CO2 titration;
-c) injection of glutamic and benzoic acid, sequential sampling in supernatant water to study bacterial kinetics (respiration and incorporation);
-d) collection of sediment.
