Objective | The PEGASE97 cruise was the first integrated operation conducted in the frame of the "ecology of small pelagics" programme scheduled over a three-year period, designed to test the hypotheses put forward on the basis of previous studies on determinism of spawning grounds and anchovy recruitment. The study carries on from cruises made between 1989 and 1992 to assess the biomass of the stock and from ERAG 93 and 94 which made it posible to establish a few hypotheses about three preferential spawning zones: the influence of freshened water from the Gironde and Adour rivers and the physical phenomena linked to the continental shelf breaks, particularly in the Fer à Cheval ("horseshoe") sector. This cruise was the first IFREMER mission to implement this many different tools (mechanical and IT tools) aboard the new fisheries research vessel THALASSA over a period of one month. Effectively, actions for acoustics, hydrology, plankton catches, pelagic and bottom trawling were all integrated, as were numerous data processing systems perfected for use on this ship. The multiplicity of actions provided the opportunity to check the vessel's good operability and study the feasibility of future actions. |
