Objective | The cruise objective was to measure the exported production of carbon along the Equator, between 165°E and 150°W, thus complementing the description made during the FLUPAC leg. Another aspect was to examine the issue of a possible zonal gradient. The cruise application was drafted by Professor J.W. Murray of Washington State University and provided the opportunity for a joint operation by scientists from US-JGOFS and from the ORSTOM/Noumea FLUPAC group. It took place during an episode of maximum spread of the equatorial upwelling, which was shown by the existence of nutrients at 165°E. ZONALFLUX consisted of an equatorial leg from 165°E-150°W comprising: - short stations lasting 4h. - long stations of 30h and two long stations at 2°S and 2°N on 165°E. |
