Objective | Improving knowledge about the water bodies transiting in the near Atlantic and estimating their respective contribution to the water fluxes entering the English Channel. Study of various sources: background noise of fallout from nuclear tests in the atmosphere, waters marked by discharges from the Sellafield plant in the Irish Sea, return of Arctic waters marked by industrial discharges made since the 1970s, leaks from dumping in the Atlantic. Amongst the possible sources is the central trough of the English Channel where waste was stored in the 1950s, samples taken to attempt to highlight possible leakage from the dumping site. The related project is GDR Manche with Irish, English, Danish, German and Norwegian laboratories studying radioactive tracers in the marine environment. |
