Objective Deploying the experimental ACID/SAMI sub-surface towfish in order to obtain and validate acoustic imaging by aperture synthesis (and on-line correction of medium corrections) as well as interferometric bathymetry of seafloors. The study was made on 5 different zones: Canyon du Var (500 m), Villefranche/Mer (2000 m), Monaco (3000 m), North Corsica (3000 m) and Giens (100 m). The trials supplemented those performed in July 1995 aboard RV NOROIT. Data acquired during these trials were processed in the laboratory to perfect algorithms for on-line navigation corrections. The trials in May 1996 thus made it possible to validate the choice of parameters for correction. The related project is the MAST2 SAMI (Synthetic Aperture Mapping Imaging) project. The SAMI project is able to draw up maps of the seabed containing topographic elements or reliefs. To obtain these results, the research scientists use stereoscopic vision by using two sonars in parallel. By associating the two images, it is possible to calculate the elevation or altitude for each point in the image.
