Objective The general objectives (Southern Ocean JGOFS) were the same as for the previous cruises, with the exception of: 1) the season: sampling of study zone in springtime to refine the seasonal aspect of biogeochemical process modelling; locating the spring bloom in the Indian sector of the Antarctic Ocean. 2) the processes studied: CO2-organic carbon transfer, differentiation of carbon fluxes; relationships between the quality of organic matter, its spatial distribution and the dynamics of higher levels of the food web; studying the comparative roles of the microbial network and zooplankton; understanding the relationships between the organic matter synthesized at the surface and its transformation in the water column, particle accumulation horizons; finding and sampling the Kerguelen chlorophyll plume, studying an "iron-island effect".
