Objectif CITHER 2 (CIrculation THERmocline) prend part dans le programme WOCE (World Ocean Circulation Experiment), description de la circulation océanique à l'echelle du globe : section hydrographique A. Cette campagne avait pour but de décrire les masses d'eau de 50S à 10N le long du continent sud-américain et de définir les conditions à la frontière ouest de l'Océan Atlantique sud (Iles Falklands-Salvador de Bahia-Cayenne).
