| Objective | This measurement cruise was part of the experimental oceanography course in the first-year masters programme M1 Physics and engineering sciences (M1 PSI) and the 3rd year of the bachelor degree programme in physical oceanography L3 Environmental physics (L3 PE) at the University Sud Toulon-Var. Its objective is to enable studies to learn about the basic principles of planning and conducting an ocean research cruise with the most widely used instruments(CTD, ADCP, TSG, drifting floats, etc.). The main scientific goal of the 2009 cruise was to characterize the circulation between the coast and the Liguria-Provence/North Mediterranean current in the area of Toulon, and more particularly in the vicinity of the ANTARES site. This involved displaying and describing the thermo-haline structures (CTD and TSG) associated with the current, computing the inherent geostrophic velocities or Lagrangian velocities (releasing surface floats) to compare them with the speeds measured by the ADCP. This general plan was supplemented by two operations related to research projects underway scheduled during this cruise (recovery/deployment of DT INSU glider and testing the HF radar's range) to show students two other concrete examples of observation techniques and broaden the cruise's educational scope. The related projects were the educational missions, M1 Physics and engineering sciences (M1 PSI) and the L3 Environmental physics (L3 PE) at University Sud Toulon-Var, ANTARES glider leg and ECCOP project. |
