Objective | Between January 1990 and March 1995, the KERFIX research programme provided the first non-coastal, regular, multi-annual monitoring measuring parameters linked to the carbon cycle in the Southern Ocean, at a fixed station located to the south-west of Kerguelen (50° 40S -68°25 E). The programme's objectives are to understand the processes which regulate exchanges of oxygen and carbonic gas between the ocean and the atmosphere; to observe and interpret seasonal and inter-annual variations in production and decomposition, the carbon flux and elements associated with this site. In addition, a micro-paleontology study provided documents on the current and past dynamics of matter flux at this station, which will improve our knowledge of some oceanographic proxies. |
