Objectif Exploration et description des faunes bathyales de l'Indo-Pacifique : zone économique de Vanuatu. Le programme des campagnes MUSORSTOM - Tropical Deep-Sea Benthos, issu d'une collaboration entre le Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle et l'Institut de Recherche pour le Développement (anciennement ORSTOM), a pour but d'explorer et d'inventorier la faune marine bathyale de l'Indo-Pacifique tropical. Depuis 1976, vingt-quatre missions ont été réalisées : aux Philippines (1976, 1980, 1985), aux îles Chesterfield (1984, 1988), en Nouvelle-Calédonie (1985, 1986, 1993, 1994, 1999), en Indonésie (1991), à Wallis et Futuna (1992), à Vanuatu (1994), aux îles Marquises (1997), aux îles Australes (2002), aux îles Salomon (2000), aus îles Tonga (2000), à Taiwan (2000, 2001) et aux îles Fidji (1998, 1999). Ce programme d'exploration de la faune marine se situe dans la lignée des grandes expéditions qui ont été organisées entre les années 1870 et 1920, et dont la plus célèbre est la circumnavigation britannique du HMS Challenger, qui a effectué deux fois le tour du monde entre 1872 et 1876.
