Objective This involves studying the various environmental factors exerting significant influence on the biogeochemical behaviour in the coastal environment of different elements (cadmium, chromium, arsenic) mostly coming from land (inputs from Gironde river). The influence of production processes (primary and bacterial production) and living particles' degradation on the partition of elements (Cd, etc.) between the dissolved and particulate phases was examined. The role played by sedimentation in removing metallic elements from the water column was studied using drifting particle traps. Simultaneously, the influence of zooplankton in accelerating these transfers (grazing and production of faecal pellets at a high rate of sedimentation).
