Objective

The SAMBA cruise is part of the programme called SAMBA (Sub Antarctic Motion in the Brazil Basin), whose objective is to obtain, using drifting sub-surface floats, a description of movements of the Antarctic intermediate water at around 800 m in depth, during its global progression Northward in the Brazil basin. Based on the trajectories obtained with 100 floats over a 5-year period, the general circulation (mean over time and space) and the absolute circulation of the intermediate Antarctic water will be estimated with a margin of error of a few mm/s. The mean currents obtained in boxes of 2x5 (latxlong) will be used as benchmarks to invert the hydrological data collected along large WHP sections, in order to obtain the general circulation in the Brazil Basin in 3D.
