Objective Studying the hydrology and suspended particles (phytoplankton, bacteria, clays and silt) on the West Gironde continental shelf in the framework of the National coastal oceanography programme (PNOC-Atlantic). The stations were selected in order to locate the boundaries of the turbid plume (beige water) and the phytoplankton plume (green water) off the mouth of the Gironde River. Observations during mission: Surface temperatures slightly higher offshore (11°C) than at the coast (10°C) and particularly in the Gironde estuary; no visible thermocline offshore, but stratification to the SW and NW of the Gironde with water which is less saline and colder at the surface than at depth; bottom nepheloid layer quite visible off the estuary.
