Objective The GEODYNZ-SUD cruise is part of the Franco-New Zealand research programme called GEODYNZ to study the geodynamics of active margins in the Australian-Pacific plates convergence zone near New Zealand. The GEODYNZ-SUD cruise focuses on geological phenomena accompanying the passage over time and space of a major transpressive continental transform, called the Alpine Fault, to the inter-oceanic subduction zones of Kermadec to the North and Puysegur to the South. Leg 2 (Puysegur) studies the edge of the plate along the SW margin of New Zealand and the Puysegur trench; the lateral passage between the Alpine Fault and the Puysegur area; the influence of orthogonal structural grains of the Tasman Sea and the Indian Ocean and the passage from Puysegur to the Macquarie Ridge trench.
