Objective The GEODYNZ-SUD cruise is part of the Franco-New Zealand research programme called GEODYNZ to study the geodynamics of active margins in the Australian-Pacific plates convergence zone near New Zealand. The GEODYNZ-SUD cruise focuses on geological phenomena accompanying the passage over time and space of a major transpressive continental transform, called the Alpine Fault, to the intra-oceanic subduction zones of Kermadec to the North and Puysegur to the South. Leg 1 (Hikurangi) studies the structures controlling the lateral passage of the orthogonal Kermadec intra-oceanic subduction towards the South to the subcontinental subduction of the Alpine Fault and the role played by an orthogonal structural heritage at the boundary of the plates in convergence dynamics.
