Objective The MINERVE programme (measuring variability of CO2 exchanges at the water-air interface) is based on oceanographic cruises between Hobart (Australia) and Adelie land (French base in Antarctica). Its goal is to observe and understand the seasonal variability in partial pressure of CO2 (pCO2), the total inorganic carbon and the total alkalinity in surface water, along with in-situ hydrological and biogeochemical measurements and with the help of satellite data (temperature, ocean color). The Astrolabe logistic trips make it possible to reach zones which have hardly been studied and document them, in order to understand the processes which can explain pCO2 variations over time and space on the mesoscale in Southern ocean regions. The data collected on these cruises will provide the basis for estimations of interannual variability and the mean variation (trend) in the net CO2 flux at the ocean-atmosphere interface. Observations gathered during MINERVE cruises will also be used by other teams to constrain atmospheric models and validate biogeochemical models based on general ocean circulation models which try to simulate the ocean carbon cycle in the medium and long term. The dates of days at sea were: from 21/10/2009 to 17/11/2009 and from 17/02/2010 to 05/03/2010.
