Objective

The main objective was to characterize the variations in the upper mantle's compositions shown up by previous studies in this region. Using dense sampling, the aim is to provide statistical proof that the number of transitions between zones which are rich or poor in isotopes is compatible with a random distribution as would result from the recycling and delamination of the ocean crust. The secondary objectives are to understand the thermal structure of this ridge, which is special in that it has unstable structures resulting from the intermediate accretion rate.
