Objectif La croute océanique était jusqu'ici considérée comme une succession de couches : une couche de quelques km de basaltes, puis de gabbros (produits de cristallisation du liquide basaltique), puis de roches profondes du manteau (péridotites). Une série d'informations récentes sur la dorsale médio-Atlantique à 15N (recueillies en particulier au cours d'une coopération ayant impliqué des campagnes françaises, russes et américaines), a démontré l'existence à l'affleurement des roches profondes du manteau et l'existence d'une interaction directe Océan-manteau. FARANAUT/ISN a étudié deux sites : 1) L'intersection de l'Est (inner-corner) de l'axe de la dorsale avec la zone de fracture 15.20'N ; 2) Une section de la vallée axiale de la dorsale située à 30 km au nord de l'intersection Ouest de la dorsale avec la zone de fracture 15.20'N.
