Objective Until now the ocean crust was considered to be a succession of layers: a layer of a few km of basalts, then one of gabbros (produced by crystallization of basaltic liquid), then the deep rocks of the mantle (peridotites). A series of recent data on the mid-Atlantic ridge at 15N (especially those collected during cooperation involving French, Russian and American), demonstrated that direct interaction between the Ocean and the mantle existed at the outcropping of deep mantle rocks. FARANAUT/ISN studied two sites: 1) The Eastern intersection (inner corner) of the ridge axis with the 15.20'N fracture zone; 2) A section of the axial valley of the ridge located 30 km north of the Western intersection of the ridge with the 15.20'N fracture zone.
