Objective Studying fluxes of particles at each step in their voyage, from formation to possible burial, giving the priority studying the euphotic layer. EUMELI 3 utilizes a satellite approach and long-term mooring of instrumented lines. Remote sensing initially helped in choosing the sites, but the studies were above all done so that the remote sensing could: 1) link concentrations in chlorophyll pigments to the carbon flux; 2) associate the cycle of particulate organic matter and carbonic gas with the cycle of other elements. The ultimate goal of EUMELI, thanks to studying these three textbook cases (EUtrophy, MEsotrophy, oLIgotrophy), is to obtain a pattern of functioning along with a forecasting tool adapted to future satellite data.
