Objectif HERO91 fait partie d'un cycle consacré à l'observation et à la description des co-variations temporelles des peuplements hydrothermaux et des conditions d'émission du fluide à 13N/EPR. Ce cycle a commencé en1982 et comprend les campagnes BIOCYATHERM (1982), BIOCYARISE (1984), HYDRONAUT(1987), MMVT (1990). HERO91 sera suivie en Avril 1992 par une campagne américaine du submersible ALVIN qui clôturera le cycle décennal. Le navire américain Vickers a, durant la campagne HERO91, assuré une partie importante des traitements d'échantillons en conditions in-situ simulées. Au cours de la campagne, 27 plongées du submersible ont eu lieu à 13N et sur le nouveau chantier international de 950/EPR. La station autonome d'observation SAMO a été déployée avec succès.
