Objective The mission¿s objective was to make a morphostructural and petrological study of a transform fault (GARRETT) located in a region of the globe (East Pacific Ridge: 13.30¿ S) where ocean opening is fastest (14 - 16 cm/year). The techniques utilized were the Nautile submersible, which made 19 dives, and a towed video camera system (SCAMPI). A geological cross-section of the slickensides forming the walls of the transform fault in the deepest part (approximately 3,500 - 5,100 m), made it possible to observe and sample the ocean mantle-crust transition zone. The mission was also the first to highlight the existence of recent volcanic ridges (10 km long) indicating a component of opening associated with shearing movements inside the GARRETT fault.
