Objectif

Le programme ZEPOLYF (Zone Economique de la Polynésie Française) a découvert en 1996 et cartographié un alignement de seamounts s'étendant sur 700 kilomètres au sud-ouest de Tahiti : la chaine des monts Tarava. Leur âge se situe entre 35 et 50 millions d'années, soit considérablement plus que les îles de la Société actuellement émergées. Plusieurs de ces seamounts ont des plateaux sommitaux situés entre 600 et 900 mètres de profondeur. Cette structure, sans équivalent dans le Pacifique Sud, était jusqu'à maintenant vierge de toute exploration biologique. Les pentes des îles de la Société elles-mêmes restaient méconnues au plan du benthos profond.

L'objet de la campagne TARASOC était donc d'explorer la faune benthique des deux chaînes, la chaine sous-marine des Monts Tarava et celle - émergée - des iles de la Société, avec trois objectifs emboités :
1) Description de la faune, caractérisation moléculaire des espèces, et découverte probable d'espèces nouvelles ;
2) Recherche de corrélations entre l'âge et l'isolement des seamounts/îles, d'une part, et la composition de la faune benthique et les stratégies de dispersion des espèces, d'autre part (Endémisme et biogéographie) ;
3) Valorisation de certaines espèces par des études plus ciblées de recherche de molécules bioactives. Les projets de rattachement sont CenSeam et MarBol.

La campagne s'est déroulée en deux legs. Le premier leg a ciblé l'exploration de la chaîne des Monts Tarava (11 jours) et ouest de la chaine des Tuamotu (8 jours) ; le second celle des pentes océaniques des Iles de la Société (18 jours). Un total de 213 opérations à la drague et au chalut a été réalisé.
