Objective Assessment of chemical contamination in coastal water masses in the Central Mediterranean (Strait of Sicily, Libya, Cyprus), using artificial stations of mussels. The MYTIOR cruise aimed to use RINBIO network methodology. The cruise was based on placing and retrieving artificial stations with mussels along the shoreline of the southern coasts of the Central Mediterranean and of Cyprus. Experiments done in the French Mediterranean by IFREMER since 1996 were extended to central Mediterranean coasts on the basis of a standardized protocol. This complements the MYTILOS, MYTIMED, MYTIAD cruises. The cruise data will complement those obtained from 2004 to 2008. The ultimate objective is to obtain a contamination budget of the Mediterranean basin. The results will also be used to supplement the chemical contamination budget drawn up in the framework of MEDPOL programmes. This is part of the MEDICIS/PIM project.
