Objective | The objectives of NURSE 2009 were to collect data for the monitoring and understanding of anthropogenic impacts in the coastal zone, particularly on late summer nurseries which are essential habitats playing a determining role in the recruitment of juveniles of several fish species: Sampling of benthic and demersal populations (both commercial and non commercial) contributing to develop indicators for the quality of nursery habitats and indicators for coastal populations' status; Sampling of the epibenthic and demersal vagile fauna on the Landes coast aiming to analyze and compare fisheries impacts on the composition of populations between the sectors which are selectively fished and the sectors which are trawled; Monitoring of the fish nursery in the Bay of Vilaine to study the hydrological forcing, the benthos-fish coupling and the trophic structure determining the dependence of fisheries species with respect to the different habitats of this nursery. This cruise was part of two complementary Ifremer programmes, i.e. DEMOSTEM (Theme IV) and DYSCO (Theme II). However, it is identified in the AIG project (Integrated action for the Bay of Biscay study site) of DEMOSTEM. The cruise will also provide a contribution to other projects and actions on complementary themes: the STRADA project of the DEMOSTEM programme and the FIS-cruises action of the SIDEPECHE programme (Theme IV). NURSE09 contributes to the SelFish project financed by the Pew Institute for Ocean Science and led by Marie-Joëlle Rochet at the Ecology and Models for fisheries science department (EMH) in Nantes. |
