Objectif La mission MD 65 s'inscrit dans un programme général d'étude de la couverture récente de l'Océan Mondial en zone intertropicale, dans un but à la fois stratigraphique et paléo-océanographique. Trois opérations distinctes étaient programmées pour cette campagne. La première et la troisième (Zone Seychelles-Madingley & Zone Maldives) avaient pour but l'étude à très haute résolution des cycles climatiques quaternaires à partir de l'analyse des dépôts carbonates. La seconde (opération SHIVA) visait à obtenir une série de sections de grande longueur dans la partie profonde de l'Océan Indien Central, au-dessous de la Profondeur de Compensation des Carbonates, afin de calibrer la stratigraphie des radiolaires avec la magnétostratigraphie.
