Objective | The MD 65 mission is part of a general study programme on recent World ocean coverage in the intertropical zone, with both stratigraphic and paleo-oceanographic objectives. Three separate operations were scheduled for this cruise. The first and the third (Seychelles-Madingley Zone & Maldives Zone) aimed to make very high-resolution studies of Quaternary climate cycles based on analysis of carbonate deposits. The second (called operation SHIVA) aimed to obtain a series of very long cross-sections in the deep part of the central Indian Ocean, above the Carbonate Compensation Depth, in order to calibrate the stratigraphy of Radiolaria with the magnetostratigraphy. |
