Objective The PROMETE programme's main goals were to: 1) define the circulation of Mediterranean water masses over time and their influence on the formation of deep Atlantic water; 2) analyse fluctuations in the intensity of the earth's magnetic field and phenomena of magnetic inversion; 3) analyse the variability of volcanic activity.
