| Objective | The ZOE 500 cruises have the objective of complementing the surveying of the New Caledonian EEZ in order to streamline the density of measurements so that it will be possible to establish bathymetric and magnetic maps of the area outside of the lagoons and to specify and locate all of the structural anomalies that may exist in this zone. The ZOE 501 cruise made it possible to specify the northern boundaries of the West Caledonian basin, to highlight a series of six seamounts culminating at depths between 1,500 and 2,200 m in a zone which is considered to have relatively monotonous depths which range around 4,200 m. These seamounts seem to be volcanic edifices highlighted by significant dipole-type magnetic anomalies. |
